Default LS400 coolant resevoir tank crack question

is this a common thing with LS400's? the one I'm looking at picking up this week the guy said it does have a small crack in it and he said driving long distances it gradually heats up. Also it has a fan shroud but it's only half of the shroud so will this also cause it to rise above normal operating temps?

Think i read once it was common on early models. Where is it leaking from? Mine did from the oring around the coolant level sensor. I replaced that and it was good but later the whole sensor failed. So that got replaced and it came with another o ring.

that i don't know exactly but he did say there was a crack for sure and to becareful driving it long distances, I was probably going to go to pick-n-pull and pick up one if i can find another LS400 in the yard. Are they year specific or were they all made about the same?

Not sure what year you have but they differ some by generation.

picked it up a few hours ago!
it's a 90' LS400 very nice I like it, ride isn't too bad although it feels like it needs shocks they're not too bad. Maybe an alignment and wheel balancing wouldn't hurt.

When I bought my 93, it was leaking around the top at the sensor. I went to the local u-pull it, and got one from a 91-92 model and it worked just fine. I think they tend to crack or leak around that spot often.

yep it's leaking right there! It couldn't have been that horrible b/c I was able to drive it home I did keep my eye on the gauge. I noticed on the highway it would raise once I had to really get on the gas but for the most part driving around the city it lowered. I don't want to risk it overheating so I won't drive it anymore until I find another resevoir that has no cracks in it.

Make sure it's a crack after it cools unscrew the level sensor and check the plastic. Might just be the o ring. Hope you have red coolant if not get it changed.

it's definitely a crack i can see it running down the side of the level sender where the cap screws in. I'm hoping I can find one at the junkyard or do people sell them on here often? I wouldn't mind ordering one as well, whichever works
