Default heater control valve open or close?

replaced my heater control valve, 92 ls400. before removing i saw that it was in the close position. what position should it be in? why is there a selection...open or close? are there pros or cons for either position? thanks for the help

i removed it because it was leaking. had rust coming from the bottom hose of the control valve.

Default

the heater control (dashboard HVAC control) opens and closes the valve depending on the desired temperature set. just reinstall the valve in the same position as you found it and bleed the system properly (which requires you to set the temperature to max hot to open the valve) while the car is running.

see step 12!
