Default Fuel consumption, sputtering and hard shifting on a 98 LS

My 98 LS suddenly started shifting hard and riding rough at 60mph engine speed. It also is consuming a lot of fuel which I think I smell in the passenger cabin, but I dont detech any leaks. Could someone tell me what this might be or how to approach a diagnosis? Thanks.

if there's a check engine light, reading the code would be a good place to start.

rough running and gassy exhaust can be signs of going into open loop ECU mode - could you please scan the car for codes and post them here? - Autozone or Advance Auto parts or O'Reilley will scan your car for free and give you a print out!

Random misfires on cylinders 2 thru 7, with cylinder 5 being last, all others were in sequential order if that makes a difference. AutoZone guy recommended starting with the plugs, then coil if necessary. How difficult are the plugs to get to? I've done this on GM and my BMW but they were earlier models and not a Lexus of course.

plugs would be a good start. they aren't entirely difficult but you need to remove a few covers, and intake tubes to get access.
