Default Cluncking noise gone, Do this before replacing parts!!

Guys, just want to share this with everyone who have been hearing these clunking sounds, it work for me and wouldn't hurt to tried before going out replacing, strut bar, upper or lower control arm etc.

So I have a 99 with about 92,000 mile I like everyone else have these annoying clunking sounds over bumps and driving down driveway. So I started replacing the strut rod bushing which usually is the most common culprit but diidnt really fix the problems, I was thinking possibly having to do the lower control arm, so I didn't tackle that, drove around for couple of months with this annoying clunking sounds when I go over bumps. Last weekend I pop the black rubber covering that covers the bolt on the two front suspension when you open the hood and I started to re tighten the bolts one on each side, it was tighten but I was able to give each side 4 or 5 turn and holy ****, low and behold the dam clucking noise was totally gone, I notice my suspension is a little firmer but that annoyoing noise is gone. So before repacing anything try tighten the bolts one on each side of the front suspension when you open the hood, just pop that black rubber covering off and tightening the bolts down, it work for me maybe will help cure your clucking noise as well. Good luck

the control arm bolts were loose?

That's a new one. I've seen it where the subframe bolts need to be tightened, but those are an actual maint. item that are universally ignored (apparently).

congrats on fixing your clunk.

I think he's talking about the top of the strut rod/shaft? Tightening the nut at the top, inside the upper strut mount.

Maybe?

Yes that's correct the bolt in the middle, there should be a rubber covering on there, remove it and retighten it.

Aren't those supposed to be torqued a specific amount?

Yeah that makes sense making noise when going over bumps, fully compresses you shouldn't hear anything but once it gets extended like going over a speedbump when it settles back in that's what you hear. Always check every nut and bolt is tightened when you hear noises. That's how I know if I forgot to torque anything down after doing a coilover install lol

Which subframe bolts? Might as well check those while dad's car is up in the air.

I'm assuming the ones that attach the sub frame to the chassis

this.

Also, torque figure for the shock retaining bolt is 20ft-lbs for '95-00 LS400s, and will be similar for 1st gen cars.
