Bad Starter?

if you are already doing the starter, the lower EGR pipe isn't so bad
I hear these yahoo's talking like they can do the LS400 starter in 1/2 hour, but when I worked at the largest Lexus dealer in America, JM Lexus, our fastest techs took about 6 hours, so don't believe the hot air in here or elsewhere!

i did not know that because you worked at a big Lexus dealership, that makes you some sort of expert on LS400 starters and how long it takes to do them. I find it highly dubious that you specifically talked to techs about how fast they did a LS400 starter job in? When I was 19 I worked at a Ford dealer, before going to school to become a tech, and even then I never talked to the techs about bill times or how fast they could complete a specific job on a specific car.
But i'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one...
Even knowing that, how does a 6-7hr job explode into 3days?

3 days would be the average home Joe Shadetree - if he could do it at all
and I never claimed to be a fast mechanic myself, although I do hold some worldwide A/C repair speed records from the 1990's that still stand (like R&R 1995-98 Chevy truck compressor, orifice tube, accumulator, evac 15 minutes & recharge - all that in 32 minutes flat
(in order to do this, you have to be wrenching the whole time you are both evacuating and recharging, and you would need a Robinair type A/C machine to even get into the ballpark)
PS - book time is 2.4 hours, this is how a tech can flag 24 hours in an 8 hour shift
well heck yeah we talk about it, we even race! - see above!

actually, iirc, the Northstar IM is super easy to remove. 16 or so bolts, the intake tube, quick disconnect fuel line, one main wire harness connector and maybe 3 vacuum lines. if you know what your are doing, you can easily have it out very fast as it's all modular and comes out as a single unit if you do it right.

so you were a Lexus Tech and a GM tech?
these mega dealerships in Phoenix each had in excess of 100 service bays, and at Courtesy Chevy, I was even able to work the 4pm to midnight shift, pretty sweet!
I am not nearly fast enough on all areas of the car to be a bumper to bumper dealership tech, which is what 98% of techs in America are at new car dealerships (they have to work the next service order, might be anything.)
about the only other area where I specialize is drivability, hence my famous ECU capacitors leaking breakthrough, and associated thread.

Hello all,
I have a 96 LS400 with 145K miles on the car. In the last month or so I have had an intermittent problem when trying to start the car. At times it will turn over, weakly, for about 1 second and then the starter stops---there is no clicking associated with this. When this occurs I turn the ignition off and then restart the car, at that time the starter spins like normal and the car fires right up. At other times I turn the key and get nothing, no audible click. When this happens I still have dash lights. Once again cycling the key fixes the problem.
Being that my battery was 5-6 yrs old I replaced it even thought it checked out OK. That was yesterday and the problem happened again this morning, weak turn-over, then ignition off and back on and then perfect spinning starter.
At this point I assume I have either a ground problem or a bad starter. Can a starter spin poorly and then work perfect a few seconds later? What would be the most suspect ground point to check? I did turn on my lights and then start the car to see if the headlights dimmed excessively while the starter was spinning--they did not. Any advice from the pros here is greatly appreciated. I have a spare car so I might try the starter myself and hit the egr pipe while the intake is off.

Got the car back last week with new starter and egr pipe. The mechanic wasn't bragging about how fast he got the starter out. I asked him how long the job took and he said he didn't know. I assume that translates to hours and hours and hours.....
What a difference a new EGR tube can make.
