Default 1998 lexus ls 400 stalling sometimes while stopped in traffic

Does anyone have any ideas on the cause? It generally has happened after 45-60 minutes of driving with long periods of stop and go traffic.

I received no error lights. The car starts right back up. I have had the throttle area cleaned. The battery and alternator are fine. Otherwise car has 218k miles and other than this issue is running fine.

My mechanic has suggested replacing the throttle sensor or the whole throttle assembly but he is not sure either will fix the problem.

I'd be curious what people say as well. My 95 has stalled on me twice, after about an hr each time of highway driving, while exiting on the off ramp the car just quite running. Popped it in neutral and she started right back up without any issues.

One common cause is a failing battery. Does your VSC warning light come on when this happens?

Is your ECU for 95 the original 89661-50220 or 89661-50221?

Your symptom is probably the same as the known issue which happens after the high speed run and the ECU 89661-50224 can fix it in most of the case. This was a common problem in Japan among 95 models and many have succeeded replacing the ECU although the JDM has a different ID number. 89661-50220, 89661-50221 or 89661-50224 are ECUs for US 49 states.

In case of the California model, the original ECU either 89661-50230 or 89661-50231 will be affected and the TSB says to replace to 89661-50234. But there is another new information that the number has been changed to 89661-50235-85.

Hope this helps.

check battery and alternator, if both check otu then clean the throttle body out, ide passages may be partially blocked.

the 95 issue is a known ECM programming bug, as Yamae mentioned

no idea on the 98, but watch out for the ECM capacitors, they are causing issues on all LS400 models at epidemic proportions

So for the TSB issue on the 1995, one would be stuck to replace the ecu from a donor car or a new one? And where would one get one?

To summarize, some suggested causes are the throttle sensor, the ecu, the alternator, the battery and a dirty throttle.

Thank you very much. Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

well you definitely should clean the throttle body and butterfly on any Lexus with 218K - wear a respirator, throttle bottle cleaner is wicked bad to breathe!

if that doesn't solve it, then on a 95 the ECU programming is a known issue, and on ALL LS400's the ECU capacitors are an issue - both ECU issues can be fixed yourself if you are a MacGyver type

and a junkyard ECU will not solve either problem, unless you get lucky on a 95 and find an ECU with the newer programming, but the capacitors will still need replacement!

There may be a possibility that the fuel pump is not functioning well by the heat. Was your problem started in this summer? Was it OK before that? If so, it must be a temperature related problem if not a fuel pump.

I cleaned the throttle body and that did not help. The fuel pump is fine. Thank younfor your suggestions.

What is the butterfly?
