Default strong fuel smell/high vapor pressure

Latley I have been experiencing a strong smell of fuel in the garage and I noticed that the fuel tank seems to have excessive pressure within it. I unscrewed the fuel cap and an excessive amount of fuel vapor pressure was released. It took about three minutes to releive the pressure, with the cap cracked. Any ideas? I know that there should be some pressure in the system but this is excessive.

Maybe you need a new gas cap. I believe they are supposed to vent a small amount to relieve excess pressure.

On my way home I stopped and grabbed new fuel cap. The cap I had wasn't the origianl but I have no idea how old it was either. I changed the cap at the store and so far so good. I will post a follow up in a few days. Thanks for the help.

So far so good. Still have pressure in the tank but it doesn't seem excessive. No fuel smell yet either.

Default Fuel cap Pressue

Well I ended up doing a tune up, with new spark plugs and wires, rotors, car is running great and NO MORE PRESSURE from gas cap. It ran alot better , good gas mileage and when i went to gas up I had totally forgot about the pressure and sure enough nothing came out. so im sure that was the problem.

whenever you smell gasoline or filling up the tank is a problem you must first check your EVAP system in this circuit you will find the charcoalcanister under the left front fender.

Your CCC = charcoalcanister is probably clocked with dirth.
You can buy them new at the dealer or clean it your self.

I made a tutorial for this problem let me find it for you.

also, the factory gas cap is cheap enough, and important enough, I would go with the genuine cap
