Default Steel Drum???

Occasionally I'll be leaving somewhere, most of the time backing out of my driveway and notice a popping noise. Not like a thud or solid knock, but like a steel drum or barrel having a dent popped out of it. I'm wondering if it's my fuel tank, that's the type of noise it is. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Its not that type of noise. It litterally sounds like someone hitting a 55 gallon barrel.

sounds like metal on metal more than a simple "thump"?

Usually a hollowish "thump" is due to dead strut rod bushings in the front end, but if it's a more metal-metal clinking/denting sound you may want to check the heatshields and exhaust brackets under the car and see if one is damaged/loose.

It has to be something else. It did it sitting still yesterday. It happens about 10-15secs after start up. Maybe an emissions valve closing in the evap system? It's definitely not suspension related.

I'm thinking it's the fuel tank. It never does it with half a tank or more.

the fuel tank is between the passenger compartment and the trunk, so it's possible but unlikely. check the mounts/straps.

Did your car every have air suspension? if it did and somebody has taken out the air struts and left the air fill nipple in the rear it could be that clicking on the new coil springs ... Just a thought!
