Dented oil filter
#31
if you change ur oil at 3,000 miles it doesnt matter..its the extended miles in between that really determine whether u need a better filter. amsoil, wix, purolator and mobile 1 are all top notch filters..but dont tell me its a matter of opinion because nothing is further from the truth. btw when ur rpms get past 2000-2500 the oil by passes the filter so it doesnt even get used when ur on the freeway...again,not an opinion
Happens every time there is an oil or oil filter thread...doesn't matter what forum

hey guys i know this thread is kind of old, but i am having a similar issue. I just bought an aristo with a 2jz-gte engine. I was going to change the oil and filter today. holy shiz the filter is on tight! the filter which is currently stuck is an OEM 90915-YZZF1 toyota filter which is meant for 4-cyl applications (the recommended filter is a 90915-YZZD1).
I tried getting the filter off with a metal strap wrench and just ended up collapsing and denting/damaging the filter pretty bad. I am wondering if the damage could cause any metal particles to break off from inside the filter. My solution so far is to fill it up again with cheap oil, drive 10kms to the toyota dealer and ask them to change the oil+filter for me. i am just concerned with getting any metal into my engine because of the bent filter.
... And trust me there is maybe three inches of room to twist the filter off of this engine. so i don't wanna mess around with chipping off a torn apart filter with a screwdriver...

The ridged end of the filter is the stong part. Do not atempt to put the wrench around any other part of the filter.
If all else fails and you absolutely cannot get the filter off, take it to the dealer. 10km is deffinatly not going to hurt the engine if you still have oil and a filter. Check billyd's post in this thread and you'll know a dented filter has the possibility of allowing the oil to circulate unfiltered but in such a short distance, I doubt any damage could be done

Thats really not that bad looking.
I would try my hardest one last time.
Again if you absolutely cannot remove it, I wouldnt think twice about driving 10 km to get it done professionally. And if you do put fresh oil in it beforehand, I think you would be safe for over 10km

thanks for the quick reply, i am new to these forums! i think i will fill it with 5l of conventional cheap oil and let the dealer screw around with it. and yes i will try one last time with one of those plastic oil filter socket wrench adapters. i am just wondering what size the YZZF1 filter is in mm as i will have to pick one up tomorrow.

My filter was real real tight also. It dented slightly before it started to loosen. Took a few tries, it's all about slow steadily increasing pressure. My oil drain plug was put on sooo tight that my impact took a few seconds to loosen it. Some people are nuts with how tight they make things.

well it turns out that i can't get the darn thing off. i looked all over for a topper plastic oil filter wrench thing that fits on a ratchet, but none of them fit this filter. i searched online and apparently the YZZF1 filter is 64.5mm in diameter at the top. I cannot find a wrench adapter that will fit this filter. the dealership sells one for $90+. anyways i booked an oil change on tuesday so it sucks because ill have to wait and don't wanna run the car very long on the junked filter.

The filter is junk, so just finish it off. The only thing holding it on is the rubber ring at the top of the filter. Just be careful around the surface the filter mates to. I think a large pair of slip joint pliers would do the job. You can do it.

long screwdriver (your choice straight edge or philips) stab it through the filter (not directly through the middle, off to one side)... once you get it through, use it like a big t-handle... I hate where our oil filters are located, so much so, that next time I change the oil, I am adding a remote mount filter... (2jz)

i've always tighten my oil filters by hand. Just make sure its on there securely and you'll be fine.
I once made a newbie mistake. I took off the old oil filter, did not notice that the o-ring was still attached to the engine. Put on the new oil filter, filled oil up, started the truck and the oil filter shot right off. made a mess but didn't hurt the motor.
