I seriously considered this in the past but decided against it.
From what I could tell, if you do the delete:

Pros:
no more pesky egr leak (if you do it right.)
Easier access to the starter if it dies.
Possibly 1-2 more horsepower (youd never notice either way.)

Cons:
Youll fail emmissions
Decreased gas mileage(1-2 mpg less)

Yes you can run fine with the delete and the 98+ doesnt have an egr.
But your car is meant to run with some inert exhuast gases in the cylinders and the 98+ accomplishes this with the vvti system instead of an egr.

Do it if you really absolutely cannot fix an egr leak. Other than that it is not worth it.
The loss in gas mileage was the deciding factor for me.

'98+ don't have EGR because the VVT-i can be used to introduce an equivalent effect on part-throttle loads.

EGR is a GOOD THING, it greatly reduces combustion chamber and exhaust gas temperatures. INCREASED gas mileage, and decreased emissions.

The egr delete is great for cleaning up your engine bay and making room for super/turbo chargers plus the parts themselves are worth a good amount of change if in good condition. Honestly I plan to do it but at a way later time because its hardly worth the time and effort to remove it.

EGR on turbo cars is even MORE important. keeping EGTs down in a turbo car is a nightmare on a good day. If you don't absolutely need it for clearance there's no reason to get rid of it.
