Default 98 rack and pinion advice

Hey all,

So my ls400 has 233,000 miles... It has been for a while been a little rough on the passenger side for a while. When driving over bumps it makes thuds. Now when I stop the passenger side makes a bump noise like the rotor is warped. I replace the rotor, pads, and caliper.. It drove it on a six hour trip and it was rough. I took it in to Firestone and had it aligned and they said the boot on the passenger side was basically shot. They recommended to replace the whole rack and pinion.. However, they also suggested that I could just replace / repair the boot. To do that it is basically 1/4 of the price. I wanted to check and see if you all think that would fix the issue. I am strapped for cash but need to fix. Please let me know your thoughts..

Maybe I'm misreading this but it seems like a strut rod bushing issue to me. I'm sure others with more experience with these issues can provide actual insight.

take it to a toyota/lexus independent mech (firestone can't diagnose crap...) and get an opinion on it.

I will tell you this, a boot replacement should cost a LOT less than a reman'd rack, reman'd racks for '98-00 are going for ~$400 and up.... list on a new OEM rack is ~$1900.

check strut rod bushing for the "thump". if unsure, search.

Thanks for advice.. I guess you are right about Firestone. My brother just told me the same thing. Do you think a strut rod bushing would cause the brake rotor to feel warped when applying the brakes?

I have the same issue. I was thinking strut rod bushing off the top of my head just by looking at the suspensions design.
