98 LS400 no start
Howdy, First posting on this forum.
My GF's LS400 won't start. It's already been to the mechanic's twice for the same problem, which while original intermittent is now not (ie, no start.) Originally it manifested as not wanting to start without a jump. We'd jump it and it would start right up, until one day it wouldn't. So we took the battery in to be tested and it was AOK. The next culprit was the alternator, which after getting it started again we took it in and the mechanic tested the alt and found everything up to snuff. Couple of days later it wouldn't start again so back to the mechanic it went and then they siad the alternator didn't check out. So new alternator and a new battery ground. Worked fine, until it intermittently wouldn't start without jiggling the Auto-shifter. This went on for months. The the other day nothing upon turning the key to start except for one single click. I immediately suspected the neutral safety switch and today got under there and swapped it out, and still no luck.
Any ideas? I've read through some of the similar threads and seen lots of talk about various fuses and whatnot, but I looked through the fuses I thought might affect starting and didn't see any bad ones, though I did find the two blown fuses for the cigarette lighters, one of which (rear I think) currently doesn't have a fuse in it.

Welcome to Club Lexus.
If the battery and alternator are checking out, the other high probability is the starter. The plunger and contacts get carbon deposits and worn, this results in a poor electrical contact. You can just replace those parts or the whole starter unit. The big pain is that the starter is located under the intake plenum so it is a tedious R&R task.
How may miles on car?
