Default Dealer quoted me $703 for p/s pump reseal

Took my car to the dealer for my safety and emissions testing and was told the p/s pump was leaking and needed a reseal. I did notice some oil on the alternator when I was changing the oil on Wednesday night.

Anyone have this before? I know my.sister had issues with the pump on her 96 but I didn't think the 98-00 had this issue.

You have a number of less expensive options and yes, most of the Japanese power steering pumps are quite similar and all can develop a leak over time. An Edelmann reseal kit is about $20, and figure a couple of hours labor for disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly. You can exchange yours for a rebuilt Cardone pump for a little over $100. Likewise, you can send yours to the Lares rebuild service, offered through Rockauto or try direct (Lares Manufacturing, 800 334-5749), and they will do it for a little over $100. Add on to that the labor to remove and replace the pump. The $703 you were quoted sounds about 2x what the cost should be for a shop to do it.

Is this pretty similar to how it would be on my 98?

mostly, there will be little differences but the process is generally the same. PS issues are far less prevalent on the '98-00 than the earlier cars.

Honestly unless you have experience rebuilding pumps, purchasing a rebuilt denso/oe-supplier pump and having a competent independent shop install it you'll be cheaper+better off.

I could have the place doing the VCG do it. I will look it up tonight and see. I am worried about spilled fluid on the alternator.

That price is
I paid ~$200 to have mine resealed/rebuilt. The reseal is generally less tan buying a rebuilt unit but shop around.

Agree with PureDrifter...Are you sure he's not trying to sell you a new pump because that price is really, really crazy...IJS....

Did you have it done locally or send it somewhere?

Local guy did it. Even among dealers, prices can vary significantly so definitely shop around.
