Any double din unit will fit and a good radio shop can fabricate to cover the gaps on sides. Adapters do not exist but this can be overcome by a good shop. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe the factory amp works with aftermarket head unit. So, there definitely needs to be some rewiring but its not a huge deal.

Does it play regular commercially produced audio CD's? Do your burned CD's play in other players?

Yes, it plays regular commercially produced CDs bought in Best Buy or something.
The burned CDs that I make do play just fine in my CD player at home or other players.

Good
What program is burning them?
The one time I had play/read problems was when I tried to overburn a disc. Have had Roxio but it had more complex ways of burning that I favored Nero for simplicity reasons.

I use Windows Media Player to burn a music CD.

I was wondering if you had tried burned CD's that were burned on another computer i had this same issue in an old volvo and i was using my computer to burn my cd's which is11is a 1500$ gaming computer with a 6 year old cd burner. I burned one cd on my brothers new cheap lap top and it played fine in my volvo. I thnking behind this is using a new program with old hardware. I now drive a 99 LS 400 and have replaced the radio with aftermarket double din touchscreen. I had a shop do this and they had to do the wiring since there isn't a wiring harness and then do a amp bypass to wire the speakers up to bybass the amp and go straight to the new headunit. This added 2 to 3 hours of labor but i haggled them down for doing it all for 500$ and they had a sticker price of 369$ on the headunit. I feel that the sound was a little better with the aftermarket headunit because you can change alot more settings with it. Other than that you can try to find a used Stock headunit and replace the one you have now.

Burned CD-R's work fine in my 2000 LS400 Nakamichi CD changer. Make sure you are burning them in audio format.

My Celsior 98 once had a minor problem playing some CD-Rs. Although it didn't have any problem with CDs, some CD-Rs had intermittent no sound problem. The problem was mostly caused at inner tracks. Cleaning the lens using a cleaning CD improved some but it was not enough.

I tried to fix it rotating a tiny pot which was attached to the pick up unit for the gain control. I rotated it CW or CCW a little by little until most of CD-Rs and all CDs became OK to play. Still some are not fully OK but they are mostly old CD-Rs. I didn't remember precisely but the direction was CW and the angle 20 degrees or so.
