Default Performance Mods for 97 LS 400

I just bought a 97 LS 400 and would like to know if there are any performance mods I can do. Both to the suspension and acceleration?

NJ,

Welcome to Club Lexus.

I used to own a 96 LS400 which is mechanically identical to yours unless you have the adjustable suspension.

There are many posts on performance and handling. One of the best is just lower the car.

I have an air filter box mod and an exhaust mod that a couple others have tried and reported excellent results. Read through the main forum and the engine forum and ask specific questions and we will try to help all we can.

Thanks for the info, I couldn't help but notice that when you search for performance mods the years between 94-97 seem to be non-existant.

I am going to copy this post to the engine forum.

NJC, some mods help these cars, others can actually slow them. The air box mod I have on my 99 would be identical to a 97 and in fact the extra cover that I source to modify was from a 97.

The muffler mod is also identical. With the airbox and muffler you will pick up 10-15hp.

Lowering the car will improve aerodynamics and will free up a good 10-20hp... the result will be just like making that much more at the motor.

The exhaust system for years 1995-2000 is identical. I am working on a complete cat back system. Don't be fooled by the claims of most Lexus systems being "cat back". A true cat back must replace the restrictive Y-pipe and center resonator on our cars. Done properly there should be 15-20hp in a complete system.

The next step would be a limited slip differential. I am trying to determine if the LS uses the same speedometer sensors as the GS. I have been told that the GS uses the ABS sensor for its speedometer and therefore changing rear gears does not change speedo or odo readings. If this applies to the LS... the 3.77 gears from the Supra non-turbo with optional LSD would be a considerable improvement giving over 15% more torque to the wheels on 98-00 models (4% on 95-97 models) AND providing double the traction.

I am also considering building a Cold Air box for the filter that will add an additional source of cold air.

All these mods are VERY smooth and Lexus like and should give up to 35hp.

I would LOVE to find a way to increase the rev limiter to 6700rpm.
