Default Transmission solenoid

Hey guys did the search thing and did not find an answer to my question. 1997 LS400 throws P0770 (tranny solenoid E). There are 4 solenoids, most of the kits i see are to replace #1 and 2. I could not find any info on # 3 or 4. Which solenoid is "E"? I have not had the tranny pan off to test them, I need to order the parts so it is only down for a day. Please help!

that code means it's not functioning right. that could mean it's the solenoid, the harness, or the plugs. check all of it.

I have a 96 and just had that same code. Fortunately for me I was able to replace all four solenoids from a junk yard transmission. I dropped the pan only to discover NO magnets on bottom of pan and filter was dirty (I'm assuming from metal particles recirculating in tranny). Bought new magnets from radio shack, new filter, toyota type IV atf, replaced all four solenoids, problem solved. Silky smooth shifting. I'm planning on draining again in a week or so.
The solenoid that is circled in the above pic is the correct solenoid "E". I changed all 4 considering the no magnet situation.
Good luck.

thanks for the feedback. Mine did not have the magnets either but the fluid and filter were moderately clean. I replaced just the one "E" and so far have had no problems. Toyota had the part for $100 cheaper than Lexus and only about $50 more than ordering it online and waiting 8-9 days.

Could this be why my tranny is shifting sluggish and jerking a little into second gear

i recently experience this P0770 Code and after opening my Tranny oil pan, I tried to replace the filter ($20 at O'reilly's for the filter kit) and 3 Royal Purple ATF and so far, it's back to normal. cleaned out the whole pan which was gritty, but no chunks, and 4 magnets altogether.

I changed my two on off (shift solenoids) yesterday. I had no codes but my symptoms were sometimes it would take off in second gear and shifts were not as smooth as I remember. Changing these two solenoids fixed the problem. The coils in the solenoids were good. I talked to a friend of mine who designs transmission solenoids and he told me over time the seat wears (especially on plastic body solenoid which is what lexus uses) and it allows excessive leak through which can cause the symptoms I had. FYI

My car has 184k miles. He told me eventually I would get more and more shift issues as the leak increases.
