Left-front Crunch Sound in Suspension of '96 LS400
I recently had the left-front strut replaced--the used one had been installed at an angle and the rubber bushing had totally disintegrated. The front suspension sound then went from a loud squeak to what is now a crunch when encountering a sharp dip. It sounds just like stepping on an aluminum can. Otherwise, the car drives very well--any ideas? There is no sound when driving over a speed bump. The strut mount looked perfect when the strut was replaced so the original mount was retained. Thanks for your help.

Probably not related directly tot he strut itself. unless it was installed incorrectly. With a fresh damper in there, it is now directing you to another worn suspension component. The next suspicious part would be your strut/caster bar bushing.
When replacing these worn suspension components, my suggestion is to do them in pairs. This insures not mixing old-new and having to go back in a month or so later to replace the other side. Alignments add up.

I just had a shop do some more work on the car and they diagnosed the crunch sound as a back strut (bad bearings), which was our original suspicion. Hope this helps in solving those weird sound problems.
