Did a spirited run and pulled into driveway and car sounded like a truck....
Hey guys...
My 2000 LS 400 had a funny sound when I pulled in the driveway that my father heard....I had floored the car to like 85 down our street then slowed down and pulled into our driveway.....he said "it sounded like a truck"...haven't heard it or noticed it myself since then....I have noticed that when I pull up next to a wall that the idle can tend to sound more throaty or lopey when the car is warm as opposed to the smooth idle normally when it is hardly noticeable or distinctive....sounds hardly noticeable unless i'm next to a wall...also noticed that when I turn the car off after it being warm I hear metal ticking (like the sound of metal cooling down)....not sure if this is normal....
Any ideas?

I would say an exhaust leak as well.
My 1998 Y pipe was rusted when I bought it. I had no idea. The car was new to me and I liked the sound. In MD we have inspections and when I took it to the inspection station the mechanic said you have an exhaust leak. I thought whoa I just got this car how do you know that. He proceeded to start it, and said do you hear that? I was like yeah. He said if you hear that something is wrong. You should not hear anything from the exhaust or engine at idle from this car. CASE CLOSED!!
I had to buy a new Y pipe and replace. They do not sell the part aftermarket for the 98-2000 so you have to get it from Lexus. Online can be had for $500 and I did the remove and install myself. Shop wanted a cool $1000 for the part and install, and I was referred there and was getting a deal.

Truck sound meaning that possibly the Clutch fan was fully engaged and the fan was spinning at full speed? A warm engine would cause that. Perhaps what he heard was unrelated to what you are hearing next to the wall?

Me and a mechanic the other day checked the entire exhaust pipes visually and didn't see anything....any ideas? I did have valve covers leaking on the exhaust shrouds for several months...not sure if this could have caused it....

I don't hear this metal expanding / cooling sound on my LS400 exhuaust, but I used to on my Jetta.... And, like you, I only heard it when I got out, or when I was up against a wall, curb or guard rail and could hear the echo.

We used to joke that only performance cars did the cooling down tinking exhaust sound. Most of my cars have done this after a long or particularly hard run. I've never associated it with a problem as it's happened on different cars from different manufactures on both old and new ones.

Is it a loud roaring (wind) noise, or is it a tick (exhaust) noise. Obviously it could be exhaust if it's noticeably louder with engine RPMs. I'm not sure if the 00' LS has a fan clutch, but those are the usually suspect for the wind/roaring noise, possibly an e-fan might make enough racket.

You can not visually inspect it. Especially at the Y pipe. The Y pipe has heat shielding around it the entire length fromt he cats just before it goes into the resonator and if I am not mistaken after the resonator as well. Mine was rusted through under the heat shielding on the Y pipe. You would never visibly see it rusted through in those areas.
