What is this piece?
I think both front sides are worn out. Ever since I had my shocks replaced whenever I go over a bump the front end makes this loud clunking noise.
Anyone have a clue? I might be interested in trying to get some of those bushings from Todd (@TM) that were discussed in the SC thread. But what are these? Steve thought they were bump stops, but he wasn't completely sure.

To be more specific, lower ball joints. Worn out lower ball joints will cause clunking sound when going over bumps. Can't just replace bushings on lower ball joints. Replace the entire unit only, and parts are cheap at your local autopart stores.

hey I got that same problem too...at first I thought my brakes were messed up but I got them checked but now I know...how much does it cost to get those fixed both front ones with parts & labor....

Those are indeed lower ball joints. One of the things that bothered me on my 96 was a loud "clunking" noise when I went over a large bump and the suspension rebounded. Items replaced included the shocks and the control arm supports. It is possible that the ball joints were the culprit but it is also possible there is a looseness in the shock mounting components. Let us know if you resolve this problem.

Are you guys sure that the noise comming is from your lower ball joints?? A common problem with the early 1st gen. LS400s was worn out upper control arm bushings, that made a clunckig some when going over bumps.
Run into this problem several years ago and the cost was $700 for each A arm (I am sure the prices have dropped since). A good way to check them is jack up the car, reach over the tire, grap each side of the control arm with your hands, and move them side to side to check for play.

I just finished changing both lower ball joints on my LS400. They were easy to change, and I did it on my driveway. It took about 1 hr each side. I bought my parts at Bell Lexus in Phoenix which has discount Internet sales. phone 602-866-3300, and ask for Internet parts sales. If you don't say Internet sales, you may be charged more. The lower ball joints were 82.00 each plus shipping.
