I thought I was the only one that drove with the tach. It very rarely goes to 3K RPM. I don't think I've ever seen 474 miles per tank in any of my cars over the years. Not even my old AMC Gremlin. That was a funny car. I used to always hear "Hey, what happened to the back half of your car?"

I cant even hit 200miles per tank. All city driving, never going over 2100rpm.
I changed the coolant sensor and new spark plugs today. Hopefully it gets better.

wow..that is BAD....

The new plugs/wires should help a lot... Also make sure you have enough air in your tires.

Hope it helps...200 miles on 21 gallons and I would sell the car for a truck. or SUV.

My 2001 RX 300 got 16-18 MPG city with AWD and a V6..

I've noticed that whether I drive like a 90 year old grandma or like a NASCAR racer, my mileage doesn't change much, whereas the mileage in my Firebird was much more dependent on driving style.

I wonder if the gearing in these things is what hurts us. Took a trip to Vegas this weekend, we took my mom's 91 instead of my 92. Drove nice, but with the cruise on 75, the RPMS were around 2700 IIRC. My Firebird wasn't geared that low, it was closer to 2000 rpm. I wonder if this is part of it.

i'd crush my car if it ever got that low, i average 22-25 mixed town/highway, 27-30 pure highway in southern cal with my supercharged '96.

Hey brett...it really does matter how you drive. The trick is to be consistant. Very, very consistant. I can put in $10 bucks and get 67 miles out of it. Right now im sitting on 47 miles on the trip, and the needle is right on top of the bottom line. That is good for atleast 15-20 more miles before the light comes on. If im doing 40 and stomp it, the first thing i will say is "thats gunna hurt".

I can consistantly get 60 miles from $10 of 91,at $3.49-ish a gallon from 7-11.
But if i drive carelessly...like the day before payday, i will get 37 miles for the same $10.

I had a mildly built 92 toyota mr2 turbo running 18 psi of boost that got 33mpg !

My 91 mr2 n/a got 37 mpg.

i also have a 92 toyota camry that the g/f drives, and i can get better mileage out of it than she does. When she first starting driving it, she was getting 79 miles for $10. I told her she needs to learn to drive better because i get 129 miles for the same amount.

I'm not lead-footing at all. Driving at the speed limits with cruise on the highways. Trying to see what my best mileage can be on this new-to-me car. (My last car was a Jetta TDI, which got 1,100 kilometres on $65 worth of diesel!)

emarknot - are you only putting $10 in at a time because of a problem in your tank or in your wallet? Or is there an attractive gas station attendant you are frequenting?

Man, maybe I should move down there, we're at $3.99 for 91. That's a $10 savings per tank. That's 60 miles for you.

@ ljbslb.....i put in $10 because of a wallet issue. I recently lost my job of 8 years. And now i have a new one. The old job paid every week. This new one pays twice a month. So when i reach into my wallet, its easier for me to put in 10 bucks vs. 20 or 30 bucks. That is until i get into the routine of things.

@ deanshark.......come on down ! Here is always room for one more.

I meant to say out there, not down. But I'm having a hard time finding an insulator job here, (23 yrs on my last job) something you don't really need out there. Ooops sorry to get off topic of mileage.

Being unemployed sucks. If I had a job right now I wouldn't be considering selling my car so much. If I can find a job soon, this car will stick around for a while. I've tried several straight tanks of driving like a grandma and still not getting very good mileage at all.

Do you think running 215/65/16s makes any difference over the stock 205/65/16s? My car came with 215s on it, whereas I know that 205 is stock, but I can't imagine an extra 10 mm in width and an extra 13 mm in diameter making much difference... but maybe my speedometer and odometer are off.

Your car came stock with 205/65/15. The 16" started in 93. I don't know how much a 16" tire would throw off the odometer.
