I bought my 1990 LS400 from the original owner. Shortly after the car was purchased in 1990, a radar detector was installed in the car. To turn it on, there is a small **** under the dash. There are 2 small lights in the instrument cluster that light up as the detector is working. The previous owner was well into his 80s, and can't remember make or model. Any documentation on the radar detector has been lost.


Any idea what kind of detector might be in there? Or how I may find out what type of detector it is?

wasn't a factory option, if you REALLY want to know you'll probably have to dig into the dash to find the unit and hope there's a label.

Well yea...obviously it wasn't factory. And was hoping to avoid ripping dash up. Where there really that many stealth radar detectors 20+ years ago??

It's probably a K40. It was offered as a Lexus dealer installed option when I bought my first LS400 in 1990. Here is their website: http://www.k40.com/lexus-pages-114.php

It's probably a K40 b/c they used to be the most popular brand. I had a **** under the dash, like you said, to turn mine on and it was also the city/highway ****. I had two lights in my instrument cluster but they were just drilled in and stood straight up, a red and a clear light. I also had a switch installed in where the mirror switch is which had a green light. I never figured out what those were for. The radrar detector was mounted on the front bumper. Check your bumper to see if yours is there and maybe you can get a model number off it. I ripped mine out when I had the whole dashboard out of my car. It just kept beeping way too much for me. Constant beep....beep....beep....beep It never worked, just beeped. I just found the manual for mine, it's a K40 model number un-700. my 94 had a K40 also. all it ever done was beep, so I kept it off.

Due to the new laser guns radar dectors are becoming of no value, by the time the radar or laser dector detects the cop he has already picked up your speed.
