Question start up run on starter ,seasonal

Hi
As anyone had this scenario or heard of a similar thing
My 1990 LS gets a run over on the from cold startup sequence in winter and the lower the ambient outside temprature the longer it lasts. It usually begins when the temprature gets towards freezing say a couple of degrees above . It does not occur at all in the spring and summer . It sounds like the starter is reluctant to disengage but it does do eventually and there are no ill effects to the engine or the starter.
I thought it was the solenoid and went through the sequence of checking the replacement contacts but I am reluctant to start taking the engine apart to replace something that may not be the problem.
I have also considered the temprature sensor on the cold start injector curcuit but it is not that easy to test for malfunction. The solenoid could be the problem but this car as not had a lot of starts the mileage is mainly highway mileage 600 mile trips . The problem dissappears when the engine is warm.
I have checked out the various international sites for this particular problem but have not found it.
