Unhappy transmission problem?

hey there, i have a 96 LS400 which recently developed a shifting problem with the first gear. it started out with the first gear holding very high rpm's before it would go into second gear. earlier today i backed the car out of the garage fine, but when i put it into D the car kept rolling backwards and will not go forward even at 3k rpm. I put the gear back to P and then back to D once again and this time the car lunged forward a bit and i was able to get it back into the garage. with all that being said, i searched many threads regarding shifting issues and it seems like a possible solenoid problem? i dont see any lights coming on like some others have, but my problem seems to be with the first gear while others had problems with their top gear and some with downshifting. any help is much appreciated thank you!

Your transmission filter could be completely clogged. How many miles and has the trNny filter ever been changed?

Based on your description, check the most basic. How's the fluid level? The solenoid could be bad BUT if that was the case you should be getting a code and if no light is blinking then I would guess you need a professional trans check. Likely it could be the band which I doubt if you could do. Get it done SOON to avert a real expensive diaster.

Welcome to CL.

What is the condition of the tranny fluid? At that miles if it has been neglected: a fluid change, filter screen cleaning and other sensors may need some attention.

uh oh guys, so my pan is out and i changed the filter/strainer, but now i'm having a lot of trouble trying to put the pan back in while keeping the tube plugged into the upper portion. It seems like the exhaust hanger bracket is in the way ever so slightly, anyone have any tips for this problem??

flushed out 5 quarts of fluid and changed the filter, started the car right up and brought the transmission through all the gears, but no luck...car wont move forward, only reverse. i guess its time to tow it to the shop. thanks again to everyone for the help. i really appreciate it.
