Default Trans Pan

Whats the best way to get a LS400 up high enought to remove the pan? Ramps don't do it.

I used ramps. It was a bit tight, but I had enough room to work.

+1 for ramps, you don't need to drop the pan down far at all, just enough to clear the valvebody.

Really? How do you remove the filter?

I tried that. My chest was practically up against the pan.

At home? jacks and jackstands.
A lift would be ze best way, but not many of us are lucky enough to have a lift at home.

I doubt you've read my thread as I clearly did it. I used 12" ramps, and drive it up on there, dropped the 10mm bolts, removed the pan, than the filter, cleaned both, and reassembled. I did it on my back, in my driveway, while it was sprinkling on me. I know it's tight, but it has been done, and can be done with less. Let me know if you'd like me to take some more flicks, but here is my post from like 2 years ago. When I removed the pan, I was off to the side, as opposed to under it which will give you the room you need to remove it. If ramps aren't enough, trying jacking up the rear end, so the entire car is off the ground.

thats exactly how i did it
the rubber gasket you get with the advance auto parts kit is reusable too - i've taken my trans pan off about five times with that filter and have reused it every time, and it has always been leak-free

what kit did you get? tranny filter kit? I wanna do mine soon but I don't wanna use what I've used in the past on my IS3 tranny pan (The Right Stuff import FIPG) cus it is absolute murder to get off once you apply it.

Yeah, that's what it was - it was $15 or $20. I got a junkyard trans that clogged up a lot of filters until it finally got working right, so I used the filter from the kit for a short while until it loaded up, then bought 3 more filters from RockAuto for like $5 each, as well as a Magnefine filter. In subsequent pan drops, I didn't have to fuss with FIPG goop or the murderous agony of scraping it off at all - just wiped the surfaces somewhat clean and reinstalled. Bada-bing!
