ok i just pickup this from this ls400 from single mother 750

CLEAN body
Clean inside

Motor driver side coil BAD 4CYL Run
Both upper and lower Pan leak oil
sound like something in trans or bellhousing like bolt hopping around
and Tack stopped working stuck at 2k

245K on car

ok what i have done so far since it only been 8hours since i just got it

got new Driver side coil run perfect and now revs freely (NO CHK LAMP SO FAR)

Now What would be a good thing to do first to help it pass SMOG CALI

I plans so far

Wires and spark plugs
seafoam vac lines and in gas tank
Oil Change 10W30

Run the engine at high-temp before you go into the smog check. I suggest driving on the freeway at 70mph immediately before the smog check it helps a little bit. If the car is a CA car then see if the Center Cat isn't completely deteriorated and get that replaced if it is.

Default Congrats on the car

Congrats on your purchase! You can check for the CAT to be coming directly from the engine on both sides and if its a CAL car then as suggested there should be one in the center as I do not know about that, but for the general CAT is where the exhaust pipes leaves the engine and there should be one o2 sensor before and one o2 sensor after the CAT on both sides of the exhaust. At least it is on the 1999 and I guess it must be the same on the 1990. I had a 1993 and all the LS400s are amazing. For smog replacing the CAT will help as it could be clogged and checking the resistance on the o2 sensors to make sure they are in specs. How to check the resistance on the o2 sensor is by unplugging the connector and connecting the forward two ports with a multimeter and checking the value. On the 1999 the cold sensor value should be between 11 and 16 ohm and at 800 C should be between 23 and 32 ohm. So make sure it is within spec as it will affect the mass-fuel air ratio and have increased emissions obviously. Anybody correct me if I am wrong here as I think the 1999 and 1990 are similar except modifications and additions to the vehicles in the newer models.

I think you have a horrific leak in the seals in the timing belt and the valve covers which is causing the oil to go to the motor. The oil pan should be easy to remove but you will need to remove the old silicon and put the new one to seal the pan as no gasket comes for it. The oil is leaking because of all seals being damaged and they are not expensive but require a lot of work to change. So hope this helps. My 99 at 150k had all seals blown and had to replace them as it can happen.

For the instrument panel check the sticky and go from there. Or check a junkyard and install another meter with working needles. I know it happened to my 93 also and it used to go off completely and I didnt know that time and paid a lot of money to fix it! But since you are here you can get it working! Hope this helps!

only the lower pan is removable with the engine in the car. if it's the upper pan seal that's leaking the engine has to come out to fix it.

luckily for you the upper rarely leaks (significantly).

I just bought a 1994 LS400 with 80900 miles on it. very clean, not a scratch or tear on it. Just waiting to install the infamous MAF Sensor. Oh yea I have the Instrument panal light issue too. Just like clockwork aint it.

My '91 only leaks in one place; the power steering pump. Throughly clean the outside and hoses near the pump and see if it stays clean. The only thing in my trunk was an extra bottle of power steering fluid when I bought it. From the sounds of some of the threads I've read, the dryed up O-rings at the hose connections can leak a ton!
