well I have an invoice on the car that says gabrial ultra strut x2. the plastic sleeves that go over the struts in the back are torn and the rear struts look like they have not been replaced. however , I would have to get the same struts in the back that are in the front.

IMO you should just save up a little bit more for coilovers. Megan EZ's are available from the vendors here for $650 + shipping and the LP's cost slightly more. You will like how much adjustment you can get from them and the stiff spring rates + dampening adjustment can handle low ride heights quite admirably.

Get the car running well first. No sense in spending $ if the car needs lots of maintenance. If you want a drop, make sure all the control arm bushings, strut bar bushings are good. If not, you won't get a good alignment and there go the tires.
With springs, you will want to replace the struts unless you are darn sure the ones in the car are in great condition. If the boot is torn as you say, they are suspect so don't take a chance on them. Labor for a suspension install is 2 bills, if the struts are dead you'll be back in for new ones plus a $75 alignment. Money wasted so do it right the first time.
In another thread about ride height being off. If the strut hat spring insulator is worn/crushed, you'll need another. One additional aspect to be aware when working through a high miles suspension.
When you are sure the suspension can handle it, the Megan EZ is the better choice.
