Default HVAC vents and circulation

Just wondering if this is normal.
When I turn the heat on auto, the control goes to the foot position button but the hot air also comes out of the side vents on the dash, not the center vents. (is that normal?) If I change it to vents it will come out all vents. I haven't had heat since I bought the car a year and a half ago until I changed the heater core last month so I can't judge by how it used to work. I'm wondering if maybe I did something to one of the many servo motors on the heater assembly when I had it out.

I believe that is normal operation. At least, that's how mine works.

That's how my 1990 operates. One of the things I like the most about my car is the HVAC system. I like having warm air on the feet and cool air from the middle vents. I was once discussing this with an indie shop mechanic when I had my AC system repaired and he told me that there is a temperature differential built into the system to provide fresh, cold air out of the middle vents even when heat is supplied to the footwell and that he could adjust the differential between the simultaneous cold and warm temps. When I picked up the car, he said he had split the temps as much as he could. I don't know if that was a load of BS but my system works great. Very comfy.

Good to hear that it's normal. Like I said, I didn't have heat last winter so I wasn't sure. This is the most complex HVAC system I've ever seen. I was amazed when I had the heater assembly out seeing all the servo motors and all the doors that they control. I was afraid to test them all while it was out thinking that I would mess it up. The A/C worked great last summer, and the heat worked great the last few weeks. I love it, just another awesome system that Lexus has engineered.
