The speedometer gets its information from the sensor on the transmission,I would check this and the wiring to it before doing anything else.

Did you try giving it a thump on the dash?

It worked for me.

When thumping it doesn't work anymore, you can try replacing the instrument cluster (with a used one).

That also worked for me.

Has the trip and odometer stopped working as well? If so I'm having the same problem.

I was able to use the thumping solution for months, but eventually had to replace the speedometer. I think this is a common problem and there are threads here that show you how to fix the problem yourself.

i did try thumping it but to no avail and my trip and odometer still work though, its weird though it started working again, its intermittent but it seems to stop working wen the moisture in the air is high so do u think that there is maybe moisture in the connection or a small nick in a wire im not sure and i thing im going to jack it up and trace the wires back to their sources soon just to check for possibility's.

you'd have to give the cluster a hell of a thump to affect the sensor on the tranny!

not when the problem isnt always on the tranny...

simple way to check if it is the trans sensor or the cluster is to see if you still rack up miles (on a 95+ car with a digital odo)

Had this problem with the 95 LS400. Banging on top of dash helped some. my mechanic said we should replace the speedometer with a rebuilt one. OK so $600 later, it still happens once in a while. Thank goodness not too often and if it does, I get on the highway and hit the dash hard a few times. So far that has worked. If I had the skill to remove the unit, I would have tried the fix from this forum, where folks inserted a pin into speedometer face to hold needle slightly above the zero point. The idea evidently is that the needle falls down just a tiny bit too low, and holding it up where it should be fixes problem. Anyway that is what the guys who tried it say. I am just dealing with this rebuilt one. and the bad thing is that it is the car my wife drives every day so when it fails, I hear about it right away.

Yea the wife is always gonna NAG about something. (I love being divorced ) Banging on it will only work a couple times but that only makes it worse in the long run. (banging everything loose) $600 seems like a lot especially if it still happens, man would I put up a fight on that one. You can get one from the JY for $50 and change it in less then an hour.

How many speedometer sensors are there on the car other than the main one on the transmission?
