Default PS, to buy with or without the solenoid

So my 91 LS400 failed inspection with the shop saying that the power steering rack was leaking. I took it to another shop and they said the same with the estimates coming in at $1000 and $800. At that price I'd rather do it myself. So I'm looking at racks here: http://www.carsteering.com/addtocart.../80-00595.html

My question is should I get the solenoid. I plan to sell the car in the next 3-4 months when I move west and I will not bring this car there, it's rusty, to be expected in New England but it would be unsellable in Oregon. If my power steering works fine as is does that mean I can skip the solenoid or does it need to be looked at to tell if I need one? Also can the solenoid be replaced without taking the whole rack back out?

it sounds like you got it all figured out... the solenoid rarely breaks its mostly the seals that gets worn out but i do suggest inspecting the solenoid for any problems

Is there a seal kit I can buy and have on hand in case I need to "rebuild" it? I don't want to replace the rack and get failed for the solenoid

Acidic,

I bought a rack from the same place w/solenoid. The solenoid they shipped with the rack was bad, so I ended up using my original, which worked fine. The solenoid has one larger and one smaller rubber O-ring on it, plus the very delicate screen filter. I'd say you will be fine with the original, unless someone has been messing with it before you.

The rack I got from them has been fine. I also bought the high presssure hose from them, but if you plan on selling soon, I'd stick with you're hose, as long as its not leaking...

Where is your current rack leaking from?

I haven't had it on a lift myself. I sent my wife to have it inspected and then when I took it to a shop they wouldn't let me into the shop... I saw it about a year ago and the whole thing was coated in ATF but I never investigated the location of the leak
