Default 1992 LS400 - Sylvania Silverstar Ultra?

I take it that the Silverstar Ultras are the best "drop-in" replacement to upgrade the first gen headlights?

The previous version seemed to have a short lifespan. How are these doing?

Cool, thanks. I see them for about $35 a pair on Amazon. Is that about right? Any better place for them?

Also, thinking about replacing the fog bulbs at the same time. Any old bulb for the fogs? Or is there a better fog bulb replacement as well?

Thanks Python. Those look a little too blue for my taste, but I'd consider them as well.

Here's a new halogen OEM replacement from GE that came out in January... 90% increased light output? Blue tip but burn white.

Here's a link to the 9004 size on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/GE-NIGHTHAWK-9...0638439&sr=8-4

"Nighthawk Platinum is a new halogen headlight from GE Lighting that puts out 90% more light than standard halogen headlights. These bulbs have a partial blue coating near the tip of the lamp to filter out some yellow light wavelengths, making the light whiter without diminishing light output. The partial blue coating ultimately creates a white light instead of a blue light that results from bulbs completely coated in blue. Whiter light can improve visibility by providing better contrast for street signs and lines on the road. DOT- and SAE-compliant, the bulbs project additional light downward toward the road, not up into the eyes of oncoming drivers. The bulbs are simple to install, require no wiring changes, and they replace standard halogen lamps using the same electrical power as standard lights and generating no additional heat. The bulb life varies, but generally last several years or more, depending on the type of bulb and how often the bulb is in use. $60 per pair."

Default Thanks Jim and Python

Thanks guys. I wonder how the GE and Phillips bulbs stack up against the Sylvanias.

By any chance has anyone done a three-way comparison? Just wondering...

somnoboy, take a look at the Eagle Eyes that Python put on his LS: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...agle-eyes.html

Last time I looked they were only $195 a pair including the fog and side lights. I'd bet that you would get better lighting out of the Eagle Eyes and the cheapest halogen bulbs than you would get out of the most expensive bulbs in the OEM gen 1 headlight housings.

I looked into the Eagle Eyes about a year ago, but I think they are no longer manufactured. It's almost as if the Taiwanese(?) vendor had a single batch produced, and then sold them until they ran out. Also, changing the whole housing and messing with the wiring might be a bit too involved for me. I just figured I'd do the easiest "drop-in" upgrade on my existing OEM headlights.

Here's a link to the Eagle Eye headlights on Ebay... They're still available if you're interested.

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_...ts_Accessories

They're for the 1993~94, but they'll fit your 92 just fine. From there, you'd need to get 1993/94 9003 HID Bi-Xenon bulbs and a 1992 HID wiring harness. This way, everything will be plug & play with no OEM harness modifications. This is the setup I have in my 1991 and I'm very happy with it.

IMO, the OEM headlight lenses on the first gen just don't cut it no matter what bulbs you try and put in them. They diffuse the light in such a way that they're ineffective with halogens and / or blind everyone in sight if fitted with HID's...
