Default Castrol Edge: 8X better than Mobil 1 5W-30?

Just saw a Castrol Edge commercial making this claim. Any thoughts from the old timers?

I'm driving a first gen.

You can do the whole routine yourself. An oil analysis with your current oil and after the change. Report back.

The short version...doubtful you'll see any difference at this stage.

Thumbs up Edge

Castrol publishes their industry standard test results on their website.
I have used Castrol for decades, they have always had good oil.

Thanks Jim. I guess my main question is whether the Castrol Edge is 8 times better than the M1 5W-30. Just wondering since I'm on the M1 right now, but certainly open to trying the Edge if it truly is 8 times better, as Castrol claims in it's current TV ad.

I bet the way this marketing ploy went down is Castrol deveopled a special test that their oil performed 8 times better in than Mobil 1 so they are then legally allowed to say it is 8 times better. The test may just be pointless and Mobil 1 would have no interested in ever bettering their oil in that specific test. But who knows. There is no way Edge is 8 times better overall than Mobil 1. I think saying that Edge is 8 times better overall than WD40 in your engine is a bit closer to the truth.

Here's a good read, reason why many use Brad Penn for break in purposes.

Castrol Edge claims are just a marketing gimmick just like Valvoline's "300,000 miles guaranteed if you use our synthetic" gimmick.

Neither Castrol or Valvoline will tell you what consequences will happen if you DON'T use their high priced synthetics because they know conventional $2.25 a quart oil lubricates a Toyota engine well enough to make it last 500,000+ miles (if changed on time and all other required engine preventive maintenance is performed on time).

I just checked out the Castrol Edge website. Looks interesting. I might just give the Edge a try next oil change...
