remanufacture PS pump for 45.79
Rock auto is selling remufactured PS with resevoir for 45.79 plus shipping. I do not need a power steering pump at this moment but I was thinking of buying it for the future since its so cheap. What are the chances I will need a power steering pump in the next 5 years?
I have a 1992 ls 400 with 150,000 miles on it

i have never seen a power steering pump on any toyota/lexus that was bad due to no longer pumping, though lots of people change them due to a leaking seal, instead of replacing it, which it isnt very hard to replace and is actually pretty cheap ($5ish). if youd rather replace the pump instead of change the shaft seal, then grab it.

Lexus Champion
i used genuine lexus seals from the famous seal kit to reseal my PS pump for about $30 or so.
if the RockAuto pump was available back then on closeout at the price of $45.79 I would have purchased it in a femtosecond.

The only thing I'd be leary of is whether the pump was OEM before being remanufactured. I'm suffering from buying a |"brand new" pump off ebay for $149 that I'm realizing was made in China or India and the mettalurgy just is..........well I guess you get what you pay for..........mine lasted 3 weeks before blowing a snap ring from the groove and loosing all the fluid. Its at the machine shop right now repairing the snap ring groove to get me back on the road. I'm still afraid of the "get what you pay for" lesson so I'm going with the Lexus rebuild kit and rebuilding my old OEM pump because I have no faith in this thing from Ebay.
Actually just discovered their warranty on the pump I bought covers shipping back & forth but I need to be going tomorrow and the store in San Diego & I'm in Canada. 1 yr warranty so maybe the thing'll break again in the next 11 months & I'll get my money back

Most of the time, it is not only the O rings in the pump that have gone bad but also the hoses and lines going to it. The IAC (idle air control) valve is one culprit that will need to be replaced, or you can cap off the fittings. The high pressure steering hose is a common fail item that needs replacement as well. As far as the pump itself going bad,,yeah it can happen but it is not like brakes that you ned to replace every so often. Check at the top of the forum page in the sticky section and look for the PS bible thread. It will answer ALOT of the questions being asked.

no, he was talking about the solenoid on the rack itself. its on the drivers side of the rack. it has a screen in it that gets clogged, and its possible for the solenoid to go bad, though i havent read of anyone having one go bad. just being clogged, or the ecu go bad and no longer switch it.
as for the shaft seal, if lexus/toyota doesnt list it separateshouldbt me more then ~$3.00, pull it from the pump and take it to napa and get them to match it up.

I was referring to the IAC located on the very bottom side of the power steering pump itself. It often goes by several names (Idle Air control Valve, Idle control valve, etc.) This is often the culprit in PS leaks. In some cases, people have just omitted this valve entirely and plugged it. The LS has numerous Idle Air control valves. One controls the smoothness of the steering,, another control the idle of the car itself, etc.
Python, the IAC you are referring to is located where you stated however that one is used to control the idle/smoothness of the car. The PS system uses one as well to maintain the steering. At lower speeds, steering is tightened and more responsive,,at higher speeds the steering is lightened and a little more loose.

i bypassed the one on the pump itself. blocked it with a short m14x1.5 oil drain plug, then capped the 2 vac sources with caps. steering feels exactly the same. its so easy to turn the wheel a baby could do it.

Tru,, I forget what exactly it is called(officially). I know it has been discussed in the forums and could be found with the search feature(hint,,hint). May even find a part number there.
