Default What Type of Engine Oil LS400 2000 model

Hi Guys,

Ok I know we have so many threads discussing the oil. But all those threads make us confuse. Now here in UAE, I came across an oil specially designed for lexus but it's API is SM ,not SJ as recommended for our car. I am using it now but I am worried maybe the engine will have problem by using SM oil which is only for engines developed after 2005 and mine is 2000.
So I think you might have any idea about this synthetic or non synthetic which makes Engine more quiter because I think synthetics make engine noisier than non synthetic. Please post replies

Thanks

rule of thumb dont EVER switch to synthetic on a high mileage engine, only use synthetic if that was what was originally used. I use castrol gtx high mileage semi-synthetic , which i believe is the same as synthetic provided i change it at the recommended intervals.

there's nothing wrong with switching to synthetic, the weight matters more.

i've switched 5-6 cars (all at 80k miles or higher) to full synthetics (both petro and ester based) without issues.

At 200k miles i am staying with non synthetic oil. Don't want any surprise leaks. Use a good filter like K&N. Just change oil more often or at least every 3k or 6mos.

same here man 200 000 miles on my 92 ls400, 80 000 miles is not even high mileage especially for a toyota. i switched my neon with 100 000 miles to synthetic and no problems, runs great.

btw lexus oil is a waste of money, if you want synthetic just go get some castrol.

Default First Gen - Castrol Edge oil?

Don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but I want to ask this again because I didn't get any responses to this a while back:

Is anyone using Castrol Edge oil in the First Gen?

I'm due for an oil change in the next week or two. I've got a -YZZD3 filter ready, and can select my oil. The difference in price between the Mobil 1 and the Castrol Edge is fifty cents per quart.

I'm using Mobil 1 5W-30 right now.

Do a base analysis then one after it has been in the car for the interval you drain at. Then you will have a direct answer for your application. Otherwise, it is to broad a question to ask since each car will give different results. IMO, don't bother, stick with the M1.

I am curious about the Wal Mart Super Syn.

Part of me is inclined to stick with the M1, but I am curious about Castrol's claim in its TV ad that it is 8X better than M1. If true, I'd want to go with the Edge. I just thought someone else here would have tried it on their First Gen already. Just thought I'd ask.

I use it now in my 92. Really not noticing any BIG difference over the M1.

Thanks trukn. I might give it a try as well in my 92.

By the way, when are you going to post a tutorial on those turn-signal side mirrors? I WANT those on mine... You have a very beautiful machine.

Thanks for the feedback violet. That's another vote for the Edge.

Anyone else?
