Default Cost to replace Egr Pipe

Mechanic wants $500 bucks, $300 for labor and $200 for the part/pipe, is this a correct price, the car is a 1996 LS400? thanks.

The pipe and two gaskets can be had online for around $125... I can't say on the labor except what I've read here online which is that it can be difficult to R&R the pipe.

The labor SUCKS - it's a PAIN to do. Might as well pay the man.

Yep... I think the tranny has to come down to get more room on it. My brother needs to replace his too on his 93 LS400. We'll do it together, its just the matter of taking some time to do it.

did mine a few months ago. i got the egr pipe from a member on here in classifieds and also found a good one at a junkyard for like 50 bucks... i got quoted $200 too and thought it was a bit much. we did it in the driveway but it was a bunch of work. there is a tab that secures the tube to the top of the tranny that's only accessible by dropping it. its a pain but better than paying the $$ if your down to spend some time wrenching. good luck

YOU GUYS..... I am 76, retired mechanic, and have replaced two of these pipes, you DO NOT have to drop the tranny, just remove the Convertor on the right side, lower the crossmember to get at the bolts takes me about 3 hours...

Default Egr

I did my 93 and the hardest part was the one bolt that holds it to the back of the block(2 hours) I didn't loosen anything. The top 2 bolts takes 15 mins. and the 2 bolts down at the cat took about a half an hour. The REAL hard part was twisting and turning it to get it out, and back in. I believe it's been sugested to do it when you do the motor mounts. Letting the engine down a little sure would have helped. There are some good pictures around of the pipe, plus I shared some when I did it. p.s. I had mine brazed for $20.00. That was over a year ago.

Rainbow,

I can tell that you followed my old tutorial on this. Good for you!
I borrowed most of it from someone I felt described the operation poorly.

My thought is that the Pipe gets damaged when you allow struts & motor mounts to get too far gone.
Some anti-seize on the exhaust parts to be removed the day before you start is most helpful!
