Default What to do with 5 x 6 quarts of full synthetic Mobil1 10W-30?

Hello everyone,

I have in my garage a huge stack of very expensive full synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30.

I bought this huge amount for my old Volvo 850s. Both of them are gone now.

What should I do with this amount? Would I hurt my engine slightly by using this grade? The mileage right now is 42,000 miles.

As per the owners manual I know Ideally I should be using 5W-30.

OH that reminds me I also have a ton of Mobil 3309. Is this the right ATF for the LS400 1998?

Thanks!

On top-off's I will put in 10-30 because like you, I have a big jug left over from a prior car that used it. In these instances, it is a few ounces worth so not a huge amount. I also use the oil in the lawnmower. It seems to take forever to use up this jug of oil.

This is fairly common and there are a range of answers on many car forums.

A quick look, this is what one guy wrote up:

5W-30 Advantages
# A 5W-30 oil grade is useful in colder climates where temperatures are below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It has a lower resistance at engine startup, allowing the engine to easily start in sub zero climates. These climates require that oil viscosity remain as thin as possible without giving up lubrication protection. Blaine Ballentine of Central Petroleum states that thinner oils exhibit less drag and wear on test engines run under normal conditions.

10W-30 Advantages
# A 10W-30 grade of oil is useful for year-round driving in moderate climates. Unlike 5W grades, an engine using 10W-30 oil can be operated at high speeds. This grade is specially formulated for modern engines which have tighter tolerances than engines prior to the 1980s. Tolerances are defined as an allowable amount of variation in the dimensions of a machine or part. Tighter tolerances have smaller degrees of variances. Blaine Ballentine argues that thicker oils, such as 10W-30, offer protection in severe driving conditions, such as driving on mountainous roads, towing trailers, in dusty conditions and at high RPMs. Thicker oil leaves a denser oil film coating on engine parts. Any abrasive contaminant which is equal to or larger than the oil film will cause engine wear. Thicker oil film can accommodate larger contaminants.

1) You can use the 10w30 year round in your car with confidence.
2) You can use the Mobil 3309 in your transmission with confidence. Don't use it in the power steering though.
