Default New to Lexus. Pls Advise

I have a shot at buying a one-owner LS-400. 1990. 150,000 miles, half it's life in California, other half in Chicago. No visible rust - one or two little dings. Leather worn, but nice. Generally clean all around. No known issues. Some service history with much major stuff done 4 years ago. I have never been crazy about Lexus, but this particular car really intrigues me because the styling is so understated and clean. I can get it for $3500. Here is my question: Are there any time-bomb issues with these first Lexus's?? How do the first ones compare in reliability to later ones?? Does this price sound reasonable?? Thanks. --ANdy

In my opinion there isn't a better build Lexus than the first gen ls, make sure the timing belt was done recently and check the power steering system for leaks. Many first gens easily eclipse the 2-300k marks no sweat and have been known to top the half million mark too. The price is a little high I'd think around a grand less would be more reasonable.

If you need any help I just picked up a one owner 90 ls400 with 133k on it, florida car, noooooo rust, garage kept, pretty much the same cleanliness of your possible lex I'd imagine, I just did my driver side inner tie-rod end today, could probably use the right side too.

The previous owner of mine had the timing belt done not too long ago, luckily.

but like i said, shoot me a message with any questions, if you live around chicagoland, we must do a cruise and show off our 20 year old stunnas.

They compare well in reliability with newer LS'. My local Lexus dealer claims first gen's are the best ever build, and give the least problems, I wouldn't know though.

Leather aint that strong on these 1st gens, it has to be pampered. Hard to find one with mint interior nowadays without paying much

Like Brandon said, Price is a bit high.

If it has Air Suspension; it could give you a lot of problems at this age, You're best of avoiding these. A/C display's will black out, but that's an easy fix. Instrument cluster can act weird, but it's also fixable. And like any car; bushings and ball joint's are most likely showing wear.
