Why did the Lexus spark plug recommendation change for 1995 LS400?
I am looking into replacing my spark plugs. The owners manual for my 1995 LS 400 calls for a platinum plug with a .8mm (.031") gap. The part number would be an NGK BKR6EP8. I called the local Lexus dealer who told me that the current Lexus recommendation for the car is the 1.1mm (.044") gap. Dose anyone know why the change was made and if it was for a good reason. Which plug gap should a go with. Since my car still runs fairly well I am afraid of making it worse. The only problem I currently have is that on cold starts I smell gas in the exhaust for longer then I should. Can anyone let me know which plugs they used and how it worked out. Thanks.

I dunno about the rest...I haven't adjusted the gap in ages. The plugs I bought last were "close" and I knew that if I went in to attempt to get them precise it wouldn't be as uniform so I simply installed them. In this case, I believe this is the spec for the iridium plugs.

I've used this thing on the spark plugs following up with feeler gauges to verify. .
