My 2cents.. first i hope i never have to do this!! But, if i do, i really think i would throw down the coin for a new OEM unit. The reason is that (i have mostly land cruiser experience but it's still a toyota) when trying to rebuild starters on my cruiser, i found they usually worked for about a month and then out again. It was mostly the solenoid in the starter that was bad.

As hard as it is to get to this thing i would not want to have to do it again for a long time! I pulled the starter out of my truck 3 times before i finally purchased a new one and haven't had to touch it since.... 3 years ago.

So for me, i will spend the money on a new starter in this case.

WOW,... I sure hope I am not following in your footsteps..... I have had good results on the contacts in the past, but it was on other cars, but this is my first toyota, but Jon, my nephew who actually did my work has done several toyota's without a failure, but he pulled the complete starter on those, not on mine... hay, wish me luck.....

This is why I paid for a re-man denso starter(150.00). gaskets, o-ring and coolant were like 50.00 bucks. It was a fun experience. can't wait to do another.

eh, my new starter from lexus was $165. i dont trust those aftermarket units for reliability. i did mine a couple months back and just recently the water pump timing belt. all a good time the only thing that broke was a small green control valve with 2 nipples, the names escapes me currently but it was cheap to replace

I just did a cheap, Shucks O Rielly one. I figure with the way the car looks underneith, oily, I will have to remove the engine the next time anyway, just want it to work for awhile. Hmmm maybe I'll have a nice shop next time it has problems. Hoping.

yeah, i noticed afterwards. i thought there were brushes for the actual motor as well, but apparently not. i need to buy a couple kits for my supra starters. got 4-5 laying around and a couple are bad. how much was the plunger itself? i found a kit including the plunger for less then $20 shipped.

I dont remember, but half of my cost ($44)was the 2 gaskets... and I probably could have used my old ones.... . and tax was $7+, and shipping was $8+, so the 3 parts was in the $30's

i would love it if those who rebuild your starters post up after a while to see if they are still starting! I honestly hope that they are and that will be the best and cheapest fix.

Just would be curious to see.

My non-removal "rebuild" is still going strong after 20 months now.

my rebuild parts should be here this week. my car wont start after its been running awhile. gets the funny clicking sound. once it cools off it starts fine. still need to buy the intake manifold gaskets and valve cover gaskets. might as well do it all at once.

I have a 98 Plymouth Grand Voyager that does basically the same thing but I don't even get a click, just nothing. Well the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood does click. It only does it in the hot summer months. Could it be the starter? I still need to take off the relay cable when the condition exists to see if it's getting voltage. That should tell me, right. [I know, I know, post in the Mopar fourm].
