Default New rear stabilizer link -- dumb question???

I have a new pair of rear stabilizer links that I will install to replace the worn ones in my 91 LS400. As you can see in the photo, there is a bright green plastic bootie covering the rubber end. I've left one bootie on, and the other off so you can see.

Ok, here is the dumb question. Is the bootie to protect the rubber during shipping, or should it be installed with the link to protect the rubber from the elements? Needless to say, the originals don't have this.

the green covers are there to protect the boot from being torn in transit.

Good luck getting the old links off if your doing a DIY. I ended up splitting the nuts down the middle with an air die grinder.

When I did my wheel bearings, CV boots, and most of the bushings I used a 14mm wrench on the nut+a 5 or 6mm Allen bit on the stud and a good soak in Penetro 90 prior to removal. Worked like a charm.

Mine wouldn't budge. The allen wrench stripped out of the end of the stud. The air grinder worked great though.
