Default 1996 ls400 code P0770 (ideas needed for fixing)

Hello, yes I have searched endlessly about this on this site! I cant find info on specific '96 tranny. It seems different than '98

The code is 770 Solenoid E stuck closed or open

I found out that my tranny has no gasket, just use silicone, and no filter.

I need to know how to fix this.

I ordered a factory manual, will be here in a few days.

Is there anyone who has solved this problem and how did they do it?

Thanks in advance for any good info.

I know to use toyota atf type IV.

I need to fix the problem within 3 weeks, because it wont go thru DEQ with this problem.

PS, I love this car! got it for 3k, it has 220K miles and has great service records.

P0770 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The ECM uses the signals from the NCO revolution sensor and crankshaft position sensor to monitor the engagement condition of the lock-up clutch.
Then the ECM compares the engagement condition of the lock-up clutch with the lock-up schedule in the ECM memory to detect mechanical trouble of the shift solenoid valve SLU, valve body and torque converter clutch

To make a long story short it sounds like the lock up solenoid is failing, you can remove it and connect 12v to the 2 terminals and see or hear it operate. I would guess its bad with the mileage. Check the wiring if you dont see any shorts in it than its probily safe to say its bad. However if the solenoid is not the problem, you may be better off just replaceing hte transmission vs rebuilding it. They are pretty affordable used.

Thank you!

I will find out where the solenoid is and test it when my book arrives.

OK, I tried changing just 3 quarts of fluid. And it didnt fix it. It did have a pan gasket, but not from factory.
I ordered a New SLU solenoid from toyota, its the same one as 93-98 Supra TT. They use the same tranny. The part was over $200. I will let you know if it fixes it.
The solenoid in question is the one closest to the front of the tranny. (there are four total)

No, I havent fixed the problem yet.
I put in new solenoid and didnt fix it. I will try cleaning valve body next, and if that dosent work I will replace tourqe converter.

If anyone wants my old solenoid, which must still be good, how bout $50 shipped? (new one was $200)

Does anyone have a diagram of the valve body for a 1997 LS400 transmission? I want to see which solenoid is actually the P0770 / Shift Solenoid E. Thanks.
