Default Buying used advice: 1996/97 vs 1998

I currently have a 1991 LS400, and am looking to buy another more recent version. I'm looking at a few options. There are 1996 and 1997 models, both in similar shape and with similar mileage (230K km, or 140K miles), for $4,800 to $5,700. There is also a 1998 model, same mileage, also in good shape, for $6,800.

I know the LS400 was redesigned in 1998, and has the extra 30 hp and torque. The question is whether it is worth paying the extra for the 1998 model. Are the 1998's better, worse, or just as good as the earlier versions in terms of reliability, quality, and performance?

98+
Although the simplicity of the 97 and earlier is nice.

owned a 97 and now own a 99, go with a 98+ if those are the years you are considering. searching is key on this, this topic has been covered a lot. in all reality it comes to which body style you like better, they will both do you good. i like front of the 97 and below but the 98 plus is really growing on me! i like how much clearer the beam is on the road. also like how there is no antenna shaft. also like the read outs in the gauge cluster. not sure if that came in 99 or 98. all in all, search.

all of that was '98+.
minor changes for '99 made things better, and '00 the same lol.

Update: I got the 1998 LS400 with no regrets. It's a terrific car, and a great upgrade from the 1991 model.

I have had 11 LS's so far, currently have a 96 and a 99. I just sold my 99 (I had 2 of them) and bought the 96.
BOTH are great cars.... 95-97 have less problems than the 90-94 models, and I think they are "tougher" than the previous models, not as many problems, easier to keep, plus I just like them....
BUT our 99's were more advanced in almost every way than the 95-97 were to the 90-94's. It is almost a completely different car, and I would not be without (at least) one.....
SO: the style and money are the big difference... you cant go wrong.

If I could find one with black exterior, tan interior, traction control, air suspension, heated seats and moonroof I'd be all over that.
