I mean it couldn't be my averaging 82 mph on the interstate going to the city...

Great MPG
Just took a road trip in my 96 LS. It was 700 miles round trip. On the trip out I ran around 80mph, A/C blasting and a slight tail wind and I got 25.6 mpg hand calculated. Coming back fighting a slight headwind I managed 24.5 mpg. I was surprised that it was that good, I wasn't trying to drive for top MPG at all. I burned 89 octane ethanol blend. What a car!

My dad and I went on a trip last weekend from Redondo Beach to Yuba City, just north of Sacramento. We averaged 28.7 mpg on the way up and 29.1 on the way back. This is in a 99 LS400.

I just did a trip from Central Illinois to Western NC 24.8MPG onboard computer calculated. did about 10 over in the 45-55mph metro areas. Open interstate 80-95mph.. 90+ degree temps and 100+ in Tennessee. 40PSI in my 225/55/17s this morning before i took off. Trunk was full and had 4 total occupants.

Not bad.. last time i think i got 28mpg and it was just my cousin and I and she only weighs 96lbs and had one suitcase.
oh and my motor mount and trans mount need to be replaced... 203k on this thing. I should replace my spark plugs too..

I have a 95' with 171,000 on the clock and I just got 440 on a tank all highway, A/C blowing three dudes in the car and 90 outside. I get 400+ every tank no matter where I drive it.

Just took a road trip to Basalt, CO last thursday. Mostly interstate(I-70 with a little I-15). I filled up once in Loa, UT. Came out to roughly 21 mpg. Drove out to Basalt and then on the return trip stopped for fuel in Grand Junction. Got 27 mpg. Drove back to Loa, and then the next day drove to St. George(half freeway, half regular highway with spirited mountain driving). Got 26 mpg on that trip. The A/C was on most of the trip with 4 people and a trunk full of luggage. Speeds ranged from 65 on the highway to 75-85 on the interstate. This car loves high speed interstate driving.
I'm still stuck at 10-12 in the city though.....

I just finished going about 3000km on a road trip to alberta and through the interior of BC to kelowna, then back to the lowermainland, and i averaged about 21 mpg highway and city.
This is just an estimation since i took down the km's each bit of gas got me and how much i paid per liter and kinda averaged it all up and used a mpg calculator.
I was pretty impressed, i got 450km out of my first tank before she hit the half way mark, just straight highway. She sure does love highway driving! if i keep a constant speed of 110km/h i get really good mileage .
City just slurps it up though and totally evens it out.

took a road trip from southern cali to northern cail then back this weekend, totaling 915 miles. on the way up i averaged 25mpg at 75mph on cruise control, on the way down got 26mpg cruising at 85-90mph while playing with the traffic. this is with 3 people including myself, with luggage, and the a/c on ONLY on the way down, in my 97 with 145k miles.
i wonder if traveling at a faster rate gets BETTER mileage? both have equal parts uphills and down (or so it feels). it was a rare site to see i did over 400 miles on a single tank without the gas light ever coming on. with city driving i never get to see that! seeing this makes me love this car even more!

The force from air resistance increases exponentially with speed. Meaning if your speed doubles, air resistance quadruples.
This makes me think that your absolute best gas mileage is when your cruising as slow as possible in high gear.

Getting 24.-25 mpg at a mile plus elevation (5500-6850ft) mix of speed 10 mins at 45-50, 30 mins at 70-80. Great car with 133K miles, wifes 99 LS is up to 168K Smooth and fast.Love 'em.

on my 96 LS400, that top gear minimum speed is around 38 mph

I managed to get 27 out of my 2000 on my commute, which admittedly is 99% off-peak freeway driving. Still, not bad for such a large V8 car with just 115k on the odo. I tend to drive around 70mph give-or-take, pretty heavy use of the cruise control. I recently changed the air filter, PCV valve (seems to be a forgotten service on lots of cars), oil with M1 synthetic 5w30 and Toyota filter, trans fluid drain/fill, antifreeze and rear diff fluid. The car appears to be running tip-top now and it's paying me back with good mileage. I'm sure on a long drive I could get 1-1.5 more.
