wow, see i never wait to fill when the tank is on empty, or if the "gas light" turns on, even the lexus manual recommends to fill at 1/4 tank. i guess its all slugde and crap at the bottom of he gas tank.

I think that's all talk. I highly doubt there is any "sludge" in the gas tank at all, just gas. They just say that so people don't run out of gas.

Default milage

I get at least 20mpg city and some highway per week and have gotten as good as 22mpg combined. At 1/4 tanks od. is showing 275 to 300 miles. Are you guys flooring it at each stoplight?

I monitor the gas mileage everytime I fill up and I fill up at the same gas station, so I believe that my mileage calculation is quite accurate. I usually get 16-17 mpg for city driving. My city has small blocks and a lot of traffic lights and I move quickly when it turns green. For highway driving it's about 20-21 mpg. My 1991 LS 400 has 150K miles and I've been using the car for only 7 months (the previous owners didn't maintain the car the way I do). I fill it up whenever it reaches 1/3 of the tank. I think that there must be bad stuff at the bottom of the tank, and the fuel pump lasts longer if it runs cooler (ie. more gas).

There is nothing on the bottom of the tank save gas. well, maybe water, and a drop or two. If you are genuinely worried then put ethanol gas and that will clear it up. Having "Sludge" in the Tank is nonsense, pure Hype. Also, unless you run out of gas, you cannot damage the fuel pump as it is always wet, and the pressure is the same as long as gas is present in the tank.

Why don't you remove the fuel filter if you believe that your gas tank is so clean. You can also advise all the manufacturers to cut cost by not having the metal screen attached to the pump intake. A few cars even have a drain hole at the bottom of the gas tank : do you know what it's for ?
Temperature is what kills the mechanical devices (and electronic stuff too), which last longer if they run cooler if everything else is equal.

Default gas milage

Driving up and back to work, half city and half freeway I get 19-20 all the time...............Never goe below a 1/4 tank of gas because the gas cools the fuel pump in the tank , running it low will cause pump failure.

This mirrors mine too. On long trips, I have calculated a best of 27.X MPG.

93 LS400 80Kmi. run the tank to empty light every time. I get 20mpg almost all the time with mix of hwy/stop-and-go once I did the poor man's intake mod (remove filter cover, block off warm engine air, duct tape filter frame to fit better). That's up from 18.5mpg before mod.

I live in Bay Area as well and get 20-21 mpg on a 1995 LS400 with 100,000 miles. I think that some MPG is more based on the style of driver than the car. Use the AC, heavy gas after stoplight, high "around town" use, and other conditions will hurt MPG. My style of driving is gentle in town, slow/static acceleration on freeway and steady 65 on highway keeps my LS around the 21 mark.

91 Ls with 220,000 miles. i do mostly city driving with a little highway. i use the ac sometimes and i will not hesitate to give someone a go when the light turns green. all this i usually get about 240 mile to a full tank. i also usually run it till the gas light comes on.
