the best option is, for those that can afford it, to just pick up a 40mpg beater and drive the Lexus on the weekend.

That's what I'm starting to think about. The LS is costing me $ 75 for a fill-up and sometimes I have to do that a couple of times a week. I'm thinking that I need to get a small car for everyday driving and use the LS for weekend's and long trips. Something like a Subaru would be good as a daily driver.

I have the same problem. Put in new air filter last week (it was dirty). If that doesn't improve it (already changed fuel filter last year and not yet due for spark plugs), the next thing I am going to try is this:

marg, I was actually just about to post the same suggestion, I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned in this thread. I'm getting maybe 16-17 city but still get ~23 highway in a '93. I highly suspect the ECT sensor and will replace it as soon as I can afford it.

I am also getting slight steaming at idle, regardless of engine temp. I suspect because of the old sensor my engine is running rich and causing both problems.

Oh boy. 11.22 mpg. That's stop and go on mostly around town short trips (and on occasion a freeway jaunt). This is unacceptable! I will measure one more time before trying the ECT sensor fix. Is there any downside to replacing that? Can anything go wrong? It's supposedly not expensive to do...so might be worth a try, as long as there is no downside. Thanks all.

I was just quoted $60.13 for part (It's called a "water temp sensor for the EFI", part #: 8942220010). Takes a day to get it in. Dealership wanted $90.

how often does fuel filter need to be replaced? i believe this was done about 2 years ago.

is there any downside to seafoaming an older (94) engine?

Mine is a 96 so your's should be higher, but I've averaged ~22.5 mpg for 125,000 miles. I've checked my mileage per tank and I've never seen less than 22mpg or more than 24 mpg.

Fuel economy varies dramatially on my 2000 LS400. I have been doing a lot of low speed (20-35 mph) driving during the past few weeks and, according to the car's trip computer, the tank average has been as low as 12.9 miles per gallon. At highway speeds (65-70 mph), the car usually averages between 26.5 and 27.5 mpg but fuel economy can be a little better or worse depending on wind speed and direction and the type of terrain. In mixed city/highway driving, the car averages between 19-22 mpg although that drops a bit during the winter.

I've closely monitored the fuel consumption of my 2000 LS400 closely since I bought it used at 38,000 miles in 2003. It now has 110,000 miles on it.
