1st gen air suspension problems
I just wanted to ask some questions about the 1st gen air suspension systems. I am keeping an eye out for an A/S model to purchase. I just noticed that a lot of people say that these systems are "nightmares", but the most common problems I here about are the bags themselves simply leaking. The bags are rubber and are going to eventually get old and start leaking. I have seen BMW systems leak at 4 years of age, so the time I have seen ls400s to leak seems pretty good IMO. I know they are expensive, but other than that.....
My question is...
Are there any other common problems?
thank you for any info, I appreciate people taking the time to respond, I have searched, but like i said, most problems are bags. Thanks again

I'm sure there are the occasional problems with the height sensors, compressor etc., but I think the bags are pretty much the reason to the bad raeputation.
Like you said, the bags are rubber and will wear out sooner or later. Actually, pretty much just like your conventional shocks and struts. But since the air struts are just so damn expensive to replace, many people want to get rid of them. Myself included.

The shocks are most likely to go bad yes, most have the problem when the upper rubber is completely torn, you can feel the canvas underneath then
With my car there was more wrong, sensors were doing weird things also, it looked like an LS400 SUV after some highway driving, the sensors are expensive
too. And after the A/S computer refused to pump the rear shocks I gave up and replaced them with coilovers.
Someday I might try air suspension again with a device I can control the height manually with
