New 92 1st Gen owner
Thanks for this forum! I've lurked and read plenty in here before purchasing my 92 LS400 with 137k miles for $3000 from a local owner. Not a door ding in it, runs and handles great but since I just picked it up today, I'm still learning about it. I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can shed some light on in here:
-The owners manual recommends a timing belt change for schedule A driving( towing, dusty environment, short trips, extensive idling) which I'm fairly certain this car has not had. It doesn't mention a timing belt change for schedule B driving (what most people do). Since I don't see records of a timing belt change, should it be changed anyway? I had an Indy I trust confirm that Lexus doesn't mention in the recommended service for the timing belt with normal driving. He told me it is a heavy duty belt much beefier than most he has seen. I'm all for changing it as a PM, but should I?
-the cruise control blinks 5 times and then turns off. Is this a common problem and if so, what would be the likely culprit? The book only says it has to go to the dealer and the 1 post in here that had the same problem was never answered.
-The PO replaced the battery and looks like he tried 3 times to enter the correct security code to get the radio back on. I tried it once which killed the radio completely (no SEC anymore!). The book says you can only try 4 times, then off to the dealer..anyone know if I can avoid the trip to the dealer and reset the radio at least back to the "SEC" function?
Thanks for the information and tutorials, I'll prolly read more than post and hope to get years out of her!

When you have a nice slick-as-snot V8 to trounce, you want it to be be optimized and prepared for whenever you decide to unleash it. An original timing belt at 130,000 miles is a recipe for insomnia.

As stated above, it's probably in your best interest to do the timing belt service (which includes the water pump and add'l belts). The interval is 90k miles but even if the car had less than that on the odo the age of the vehicle would make this service mandatory as well IMO.

yeah, mine charged me $45.00 and it was done. Easiest way I could see to get it going again..They didn't give me a new code so I hope they just disabled the security feature on it or I'll be going back again after I do the timing belt/waterpump/tuneup on it.

You should be all set. I've had my battery disconnected multiple times without any code issues.

Timing belt/waterpump done now. The belt looked good but had very small cracking on the face (not the teeth) of it. Had 132600 when I changed it.
Now if I can just get rid of these bottle-cap wheels for something nicer I'll be golden..

There, that's better!
I stayed with stock wheels/tires since I'm older I guess and don't care much for the larger wheel look, Kumho Solus 716 tires with MB Wheels Seven X! Quiet ride and looks a little less dated...
