"R" light stays on when headlights turned on
Hi everyone -
A couple weeks ago, I had body work done on the back panel of the driver's side of the car. (1990 LS400).
Whenever the headlights are on (even without starting the car), the (orange) Reverse lights stays lit on the dash.
I was driving at night when I first noticed this problem (because this only happens when the headlights are on)... and also the RPM's rev when trying to keep up with traffic.
Otherwise, the car runs perfectly fine during the daytime.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Sounds like a variation of the "broken wires in the left trunk hinge" problem. Search this LS400 subforum for the word "hinge" and you will find lots of threads and explicit instructions on how to fix it.

Yes, I had checked the wires in the trunk earlier ... didn't see any damage.
But I'd rather have a mechanic look at it (I am not car savvy).
Would any good mechanic look it over or do I have to go to a Lexus/Toyota dealer?
Is it a simple fix (if that is the issue)? Would the revving be caused by wiring, too?

Well, I got back in there ... checked it again...sure enough! Found a yellow wire and a white/blue striped wire cut right under that darn trunk hinge.
I will go from there ...
really excited to see this thing fixed!
Would you happen to know just what those specific wires are for?
Thanks for the advice everyone!

No, but you might be able to find out by checking the wire color at each bulb socket in the trunk lid.
The broken hinge wire problem is what first brought me to this forum back in 2003 when it happened on the 90 LS I used to own. You'll find lots of good information on this forum.

UPDATE -
Turns out the repair cost less than $3 (for some extra electrical tape) and 30 minutes help from my mechanic brother.
Fantastic! My car is back to normal ... reverse light now is off the dash, no more jumping RPM's ... and I can get back out on the road after dark!!
Thanks a million to everyone for their help!
