Does Minor Leak in Steering Rack and Pinion Matter
I have a very minor leak in my 1996 LS400's (w/ 151k miles) rack and pinion assembly. When I say minor, I mean I have to replace (literally) a couple of ounces of steering fluid every three or four weeks. Otherwise, I do not experience any mechanical problems with the steering whatsoever. Of course the Toyota dealer says I need to replace the steering assembly. My question is: does this steering fluid leak even matter? Can I just top off my steering fluid every few weeks, or am I inviting a serious problem in the future? Also, is replacing the entire steering rack and pinion assembly a DIY? For reference, I was able to replace the ball joints and strut rods myself. Thanks in advance for any opinions!

As long the leak is not at pump, no problem. I have the same kind of leak from my PS rack, so i add couple of ounces every month. You could replace the rack and tie rods too, its not too hard, might need an alignment later.
