Default '96 LS400 Tranny failure

Hello,

I was having some whining noise issue with my transmission for a couple of weeks.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...converter.html

Today, the transmission finally failed. It seems like the transmission is slipping and does not want to move. I got the car towed and started her up to see if I could drive it up the driveway. The car started to move again.

What could be wrong with the transmission? Do I need a rebuild or could a failed torque converter do this? Is there a diagnosis procedure I could do that will spit out codes. I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks.

i recommend changing the trans filter, and doing a complete trans fluid flush. the whinning noise is from the trans filter being clogged. the fluid is trying to get through the filter at a high rate of speed.. happened to me once, changed the filter and did a drain refill of the trans fluid (2qts), and it ran great... 2yrs later i hear that same whinning noise again, and i suspect it being all the old fluid i never flushed out of the trans.... i changed the filter again for good measure, and did a full trans flush. now it shifts better than ever (at least since ive owned it).

the slipping you are feeling is, theres not enough line pressure going through the passages in the trans, beacuse of the clogged filter causing the clutches to slip. this slipping causes material to be shaved off, ultimately wearing out the clutches, bands, etc... just change the filter and do a full trans flush and get back to us on how your car feels then....

Today, I had some time to work on the car. I started the car and tried to drive it but it would not move. The whining noise is now gone and it feels like the transmission is neutral.

I bought a used transmission from the junk yard for $500 with a 60 day warranty and am in the process of swapping them out. I took the exhaust pipes, propellar shaft, and most of the parts from the transmission.

The only problem I am having is removing the two bolts near the bell housing. There are a total of 10 bolts. I lowered the transmission as far as I could without hitting the rear engine mounting member and used about 3' of extension to get to the bolts. I am trying to use a ratchet near where the propellar shaft attaches to the transmission.

The problem is I can't see the bolts. Is there an easier way to access the two bolts? I would like to hear what some of you did to remove the transmission. Thanks.
