Default intermittent limp-home mode - WHY?

my car is hard to start and runs on high idle (17-1900 ish) and hardly any power when a gear's engaged. so called limp home mode from what I am told. Thing is, this is intermittent and every so often the car just all of a sudden runs well for a bit. Then once it cools down the same problem occurs. What is it? A bad sensor? Idle valve? ECU?

uh, yeah...that should have been an obvious abb for me. Oh well.

Yes, there's a CEL on...but here's the thing. I already went past lexus and had the tech connect to their computer. I was hoping they could tell me what was wrong, then I could go home and fix it.

Thing is, we couldn't get a reading from the ECU.

My only option now is to return it to them and have them figure out why the ECU didn't give a reading and take it from there. I'm afraid that's going to be $$$ - so I thought I'd check in here first

if you can't READ the CEL from the ECU then there's a pretty high chance it's the ECU itself.

unless you got REALLY unlucky and had a random wiring issue.

Pull the EFI fuse to reset the ECU. If the problem persists immediately after the fuse was pulled, then your ECU may have gone south. I would pull the ECU and check its internals (leaking capacitors).
